Why You Shouldn’t Move to Mexico

While it may seem like an attractive option for those beginning their digital nomad journey, there are several reasons why moving to Mexico from the USA in 2023 may not be the best choice. While the country may be geographically close and relatively inexpensive, there are certain factors to consider that could make the move less than ideal.

Rather than rehashing the obvious benefits of moving to Mexico, I want to draw attention to some of the potential downsides that should not be overlooked and some factors why it might not be right for you.

1.) You Don’t Want to Learn Spanish

Listen up, amigo! If you're thinking of moving to Mexico without knowing any Spanish, you're about as useful as a cactus in a rainforest. You might as well just pack up your sombrero and head back to Gringolandia.

Sure, you could try to create your own little "Gringo Gulch" with all your fellow expats, but let's be real, that's like eating at a Taco Bell and pretending it's authentic Mexican cuisine. If you want to really experience the culture, you gotta learn the language or at least command a basic understanding.

Think about it, how else are you going to understand the lyrics to "la chona" or order a plate of chilaquiles without looking like a total güero? And don't even get me started on trying to navigate the mercado without any Spanish skills. You'll end up buying a donkey instead of a piñata, and nobody wants that.

So, grab a cerveza, put on some banda music, and start learning Spanish. Who knows, you might even impress the locals with your spicy new vocabulary.

2.) Because it is “Cheap”

While it's true that Mexico is generally less expensive than the USA, solely coming for that reason may not be the best motivation. It's important to remember that Mexico is not a poor country, and calling it such is disrespectful to the locals who work hard to maintain their way of life.

While you can certainly find affordable options for things like food and housing, it's important to also recognize that some items like electronics and brand clothing can be more expensive. It's not fair to the locals to come here and try to exploit lower costs without having any genuine interest in the culture.

Furthermore, if you're not careful with your negotiation skills, you could contribute to the issue of gentrification and drive up prices for locals who are already struggling. It's important to be mindful of the impact that your choices can have on the community you're entering.

In short, while cost is certainly a factor to consider when moving to Mexico, it's important to also approach the decision with a genuine interest in the culture and a sense of responsibility to the local community.

3.) You Aren’t Patient or Understanding

So, you think you can just waltz into Mexico and stick to your old schedule? Think again, my friend. Here, meals aren't just something you inhale on the go. Oh no, they're an experience to be savored, enjoyed, and possibly even stretched into a three-hour affair. And don't even get me started on shopping. Going to one store? Ha! That's so 2022. Here, you'll be hitting up a dozen different places just to find everything on your list.

And let's talk about time. You know that punctuality thing you were raised to value? Yeah, that doesn't really fly here. In fact, showing up fashionably late is practically a national pastime. And don't be surprised if your water delivery or gas service shows up, oh, let's say sometime in the next century.

Look, the bottom line is this: Mexico operates on a different clock than what you're used to. If you want to thrive here, you're going to have to mentally adapt to the slower pace of life. Otherwise, you'll be tearing your hair out every time your plans are derailed by an unexpected siesta or a fiesta that goes on until sunrise. So take a deep breath, relax, and embrace the Mexican way of life. It's a journey, but it's worth it.

4.) If you Are an Introvert or don't like noise

Listen, if you're the type of person who likes to blend into the background and avoid social interactions, Mexico might not be the place for you. This is a country where every street is alive with activity, from the dogs barking on the rooftops to the fireworks exploding in the sky. And don't be surprised if you suddenly find yourself being awoken to the sound of a loudspeaker truck trying to buy a used mattress. Hey, it's just another day in Mexico!

But seriously, this is a place where people are densely packed together and social interaction is practically mandatory. If you're a bit on the shy side, get ready to have your world rocked. The people and places here will suck you into their events and parties, and your neighbors will take a vested interest in your life. So if you're not ready for a little bit of attention, you might want to rethink your plans.

Oh, and don't forget about relationships. Things are a little different here, in case you haven't noticed. Romance is more affectionate and emotional, and you might find yourself getting swept up in the passion of it all. So if you prefer a quiet, reserved life, Mexico might not be the best fit for you.

5.) If you Expect it to be the Same as Home

Mexico is both near and far in terms of culture, and sometimes it's easy to forget that you are indeed not at home. Many conveniences are available to you, like your favorite store or fast food, but it's very important to recognize and respect that this is not your country at the end of the day. You are a welcomed guest during your 6-month stint, and you need to show gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity to be in such a wonderful place. Mexicans want to share their country and culture, and they are entirely open, so take them up on this offer. Please, at all costs, do not treat living here in the same way you would treat being at an all-inclusive resort in Cabo. Use your time in Mexico to appreciate the differences and yes, advantages that Mexico has over the USA.
